Whose Voice Do You Hear?

January 1, 2025

In a world filled with competing voices and endless distractions, this devotional challenges listeners to hear and follow the voice of Jesus above all the noise of modern life.

Introduction

There are different ways to learn. One of the ways that is rarely used in a congregational setting is an object lesson. Tonight I will be using an object lesson while trying to make a point. Object lessons are modern day parables in many ways. An object lesson tries to make a single point using some object that is common place to illustrate that point. I have asked Paul to lead us in a number of songs which also will highlight the point I want to make tonight. I trust that our time together will heighten our desire to listen to the voice of Jesus.

The Noise of Our World

There are so many voices in our world. We can go anywhere in this world in fairly short amount of time. We can ship items, when those items have to absolutely positively arrive overnight. Our streets are crowded. Traffic slows to crawl at times and while we sit in traffic we can listen to our favorite radio station or music group. Or if that fails to entertain and occupy us, we can talk on our cell phone.

As long as there are credit cards, money doesn’t seem to be a problem. We can speed our way through life, or entertain ourselves. And if all else fails to keep us busy and happy, we hop on a plane, head to another location, and call our friends to let them know that we are in different place.

And don’t forget the coffee, the internet, and the fireworks. That’s what we really want is fireworks. Nothing really matters unless we feel something and if we feel something then it must be good. But this all takes money. And the traffic still slows us down so we look for more fireworks and entertainment. And we listen to the voices of artists. Radio isn’t enough. We want to hear what we want to hear when we want to hear it. Not a bad thing, but now we get to be more selective about the voices we hear.

And life just gets faster. There is so little quiet. All we hear is the cacophony of noise. Money, credit, singers, bands, radio, television, logos, travel, crowds, fireworks, cell phones, faster and faster we go. Whose voice are you hearing? Can you hear the Master’s voice over the noise of our world? Are you having a hard time listening to me while all these images flash? If you are having a hard time here, how much more difficult is it everyday to listen to the one voice that matters? Prayer.
