Lord's Supper Devotional
This devotional challenges worshipers to recognize communion as a communal act, not merely individual reflection, and suggests practical ways to affirm community while honoring Jesus through shared worship.
Much of worship is spent pouring out our heart of love to God
Songs, prayers, words, and communion are intended to express our gratitude to an all gracious and merciful God. Part of the challenge of our assembly is to express our thanks and love while remembering that we are with others. Our assembly is not just for us but in connection with others. Our worship is not in isolation but with others. The challenge is found in some of the traditions that have been passed on which make community more difficult.
For instance, our seating doesn’t allow us to see one another
We are only allowed to see the back of the heads of the person in front of us and perhaps allowed to look to our sides. Our training about the Lord’s Supper is that it is to be with bowed heads and reflective hearts. And certainly that is good, but it isn’t the only possible form that the Lord’s Supper must take. There are a number of ways to express both our determination to honor Jesus as we eat this together while at the same time acknowledging that others are joining us in this communion. Just having completed Thanksgiving meals, we would find it difficult to understand eating at table without talking to one another or looking at each other.
A. We could sing a song during this time—a song which expresses our reflection of who Jesus is while allowing the blending of voices to recognize that we are not alone while sharing in this communion.
B. We could encourage one another by looking around at others. While words may not be expressed; the smiles, the nodding of heads and the looks of sharing can bring us closer.
C. We could take a couple of minutes and just walk around before the elements are passed to express our love to each other and our commitment to our God.
D. We could even ask everyone to come to the front and stand around this table so that we can share the elements together.
The point is that we are by the grace of God together today
The point is that we are by the grace of God together today—not just so we can go through an assembly but so that we can encourage each other in our walk with God while expressing how much we love him and depend upon him. For the next two minutes, let’s just express our love to each other and then we’ll share in this communion together.
